MASON CITY – the trial involving the estate of a Nora Springswoman who died in November 2009 after lap band surgery has beencontinued until August 2012.
The estate of Tammara Ann Haxton filed suit in December 2010against two surgeons and the Mason City Clinic. the trial was tobegin June 20, 2012 in Cerro Gordo County District Court in MasonCity. But the trial date has now been pushed back to Aug. 21,2012.
Haxton, 49, underwent the surgery on Oct. 23, 2009. Dr. KyleVerSteeg performed the operation assisted by Dr. Hussein Mohamed.Both surgeons were on staff with the Mason City Clinic at thetime.
VerSteeg allegedly struck one of Haxton’s major blood vessels atthe beginning of the procedure, causing her to lose bloodinternally at a rapid rate, according to the Cerro Gordo CountyDistrict Court lawsuit filed by Haxton’s sister, Kerry Johnson,administrator of her estate.
In an effort to stabilize Haxton, VerSteeg and Mohamedcross-clamped the vessel, shutting off the flow of blood to theheart, the lawsuit states. they did this without informing theanesthesiologists, according to the lawsuit.
Dr. Jeffrey Rowe, a vascular surgeon, entered the operating rooman hour after the start of surgery. He repaired holes in the bloodvessel, re-established blood flow and stabilized the patient’sblood pressure, according to the lawsuit.
However, Haxton suffered substantial brain injury due to theprolonged low blood pressure during the surgery and did notrecover, the lawsuit states. she died on Nov. 17, 2009.
